Language and reading development

The Language and Literacy team provides a range of resources encompassing evidence-based research, to enable educators, families and home tutors to support children’s development of language, reading and writing. The team work in partnership with researchers and universities to develop and deliver best practice in reading and writing instruction.

The key components of reading and writing are integrated within all learning areas of the Australian Curriculum. They are delivered through teaching practices that emphasise explicit instruction, practice and feedback.

Parents and carers also play a vital part in supporting their children to read. The videos support children’s early language and reading development at home and at school.

Multilingual language development

Early oral language skills build the foundation for later literacy achievement. Children who understand and/or use 2 or more languages or dialects are multilingual.

There are many benefits to multilingualism, including improved learning at school, social skills, self-confidence and cognitive development. More than 1 in 4 Australian children speak a language other than English when they start school. The 2 animated videos provide evidence-based information about multilingualism and empower families to maintain home language/s.

Facts about multilingualism

Children who are multilingual learn language differently. The facts about multilingualism video External link describes some unique features of multilingual language development. This includes switching between languages in the same conversation or situation, the period of time while multilingual children listen to and learn new words (silent period) and applying knowledge from one language to another (language transfer).
